Suicide Is Not An Option

Our task for this week was to provide insight to Global Suicide Rate from 1985 till 2016. We got the dataset we needed pretty quickly from Kaggle. Here's the link kaggle.com/code/jefsoneg/global-suicide-rat..

The data contained 12 columns and over 27500 rows. After opening the data in excel, we removed two columns, "HDI for year" and "Generation", because they weren't useful to us. We removed duplicate data from the dataset and renamed the columns properly. We opened Microsoft Power BI and imported the cleaned data, then loaded it for visualization.

According to the data, over six and half million suicides were recorded all over the world between 1985 and 2016, with more than 75% of cases being males.

There are many factors responsible for this gender imbalance in suicide cases. The major one being that men are reluctant to ask for help. There are several reasons why men may be reluctant to ask for help, but the most common is that they don’t want to be seen as weak. Men are often taught that they should be strong and independent from a young age and that asking for help is a sign of weakness. As a result, some men feel ashamed or embarrassed to admit that they need help and often try to deal with their problems on their own. Men are also reluctant to ask for help because they don’t know how to ask for it. Many men are raised in households where emotions aren’t discussed openly, and as a result, they may not feel comfortable talking about their feelings with other people. This can make it difficult to ask for help when they need it.

Also, 36% of the recorded suicide cases were of those between the ages of 35 and 54.

This can be attributed to the many problems that people in this age range experience. These problems include marital issues, financial hardships, depression, substance abuse, just to name a few.

While Russia had the most recorded suicide cases, Lithuania had the highest suicide per 100k population.

Suicide per 100k population is recommended when comparing suicide occurrences between locations. This is because, when comparing just the number of cases between different locations, a particular location may be more populated than the other and this might reflect in the number of suicide cases, and this isn't the case for suicide per 100k population.
